1903-13:
Bayonets between 1903 and 1913 were manufactured by Remington, Rock Island Armory, Ross Rifle Co. and the Springfield Armory. Springfield Rock Armory produced the M1905 meant for the 1903 series bolt action rifles or the Springfield ‘03 as it is also known as. They also started making the M1905 during this period and continued making this model until 1922. The Rock Island Armory also produced a model M1905 from 1906 to 1913. The M1905 was a well made weapon out of all steel but yet it had a plastic grip that was held on with one screw. It had a bird’s head pommel and the standard, push button spring latch. It has a fuller on both sides with a single cutting edge that stops just before the tip of the weapon. The scabbards for the M1905 were made in many different forms. You can find them with leather or canvas covered wood and that have a variety of options for the belt hook. The ones produces during this time that were used in WWI over the coming years are green and appear to be made of plastic, but really it is fiberglass and has a throat of sheet steel with a US stamped in the middle of an ordnance bomb. The Ross Rifle Co. was producing the M1903 during this time as well but the US military never formally made it a part of their arsenal nor the Ross rifle for that matter. The rifle was first adopted by Canada in 1905 and then the bayonet was meant to be part of the unit in 1908.
