1914-18 WW I:
WWI started with the use of M1913 bayonet that was manufactured by Remington and then the M1917 from both Remington and Winchester. The Winchester M1917 is harder to find than the Remington is. The M1913 is not short enough to be a knife yet it’s not quite long enough to be sword and that makes many people call it a sword bayonet and others call it a knife bayonet. It’s actually a nice blend between the two and known more commonly as a trench knife. It was manufactured to fit the 1913/1914 Enfield .303” caliber rifle. The ones made specifically for the US are stamped with a U.S. underneath the inspector’s mark if they were marked that way. It also will have the year it was made and the month underneath that on the other side. It is very similar to the M1917 but doesn’t have the ordnance bomb logo on it. The scabbards were normally army green that felt like plastic but were actually fiberglass and had a steel throat or made from green leather with a steel throat and a drag accompanied by a belt hook. The M1917 is fairly close to looking like a M1913 but it will have the ordnance bomb logo stamped on it along with an eagle head above the manufactured date. The pommel on this model will have an oil-hole. These also have the same kind of scabbards as the 1913. They were made to fit the Enfield or Eddy stone .303” caliber rifle.
